As apart of unit 12, we have to write an essay on a chosen topic, I've started brainstorming some ideas using my journal and the mind map from my social issues module. Essay Ideas:
- Child Exploitation, I thought about expanding my research from exploitation on social media to Hollywood.
- Body image, how body shaming has become normalised on social media
- Women's equality
- Abortion
- The impact of queer culture in the Media
- Mass consumerism; the rise of online shopping
To narrow down my final idea for this essay, I thought I'd do research on the individual topics, starting with fast fashion. I've added my findings into the 'research' page of my blog. I think the essay topic that I'm leaning towards is 'Child Exploitation in the Media'.

Pecha Kucha notes:
All slides have a time limit of 20 seconds so I think one or two sentences would be enough per slide, a short explanation of the picture or the topic included on the slide.
Slide 1: My FMP is based on the topic of mass consumerism; the rise of fast fashion on social media
Slide 2: I'll be making a website using Wix, and I'll also be taking. series of photos which will be included in the website, preferably with a Canon camera
Slide 3: Here are some of the product examples that I've found; here's the front-page of 'Reformation' and 'Vivienne Westwood'
Slide 4: My primary research results; these are some of the answers that I've received from my classmates, it was helpful to narrow down my target demographic
Slide 5: Moodboard that I've created, these pictures are a mix of brands, professional photography, and protest against fast fashion
Slide 6: Materials that I'll be using; a bag of old clothes, a chair, a tripod, softboxes, and a camera
Slide 7: Here are some sustainable fabrics that is an alternative to polyester or nylon: linen, organic cotton, silk, bamboo, wool, and cashmere
Slide 8: Throughout this project, I'll be using InDesign, Photoshop, and Wix to create my products
Slide 9: Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are good platforms to promote my products, I can also attach the account names to the contact page on my Wix website
Slide 10: Topic research; Here is a photo the research that I've conducted, for this project I mostly used statistic websites, Vivienne Westwood's sustainable sources on their website, and my 1500 essay has been a good method of topic research for this unit.
Slide 11: The economic factors of fast fashion, discarded clothes often end up in landfills or into the ecosystems as shown in the third picture.
Slide 12: Here are some photos of the first inventions that led to the boom of the fashion industry, on the top right is a sketch of the first sewing machine, the 'Spinning Jenny' which was one of the key developments for the industrialisation of the textile industry. Rana Plaza factory protesters, this tragedy was a direct cause of the fast fashion industry, resulting in 1,100 deaths.
Slide 13: This is my photography inspiration, I think that having pile of clothes would symbolise mass consumption, especially when buying clothes as I personally tend to go overboard.
Slide 14: Protests against the fast fashion industry, extinction rebellion protesters on the fashion runway speaking out against overconsumption in the fashion industry
Slide 15: My target demographic are teenagers and young adults, these are the people that I've noticed are the most interested in buying fast fashion. They also use social media the most which is guaranteed to be a big influence on their fashion choices.
Slide 16: Project planning documents, the timetable from the week of 24/02/2025, location recce and the risk assessment, the location is noted down as being the colleges studio as its the most accessible.
Slide 17: Inspiration for my project, this is the British fashion designer, Vivienne Westwood and the British photographer, Craig McDean
Slide 18: Sustainable fashion history, I've included pictures from the 70s up until the 2020s, the 70s was when the sustainable fashion movement took off following the rise of natural fibres such as hemp and organic cotton as an alternative to synthetic, petroleum based textiles.
Slide 19: 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s sustainable fashion history, slow fashion has become popular in the recent years with fashion influencers suggesting a 'capsule wardrobe' and recommending second hand shops as an alternative to sites such as H&M and Shein.
Slide 20: Further research, statistics about fashion waste have been a helpful source of research throughout this project. Thank you for listening.
Pecha Kucha Preparation: A Pecha Kucha is a storytelling format in which a presenter formats 20x20 slides for 20 seconds per slide, they can be used for business meetings or in educational settings. The concept was created in 2003 by Tokyo's Klein-Dytham architecture, it was a way to attract people to SuperDeluxe and engage young designers to meet, show, and design their work in under 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

Pecha Kucha moodboard:
I created a moodboard on Canva to figure out the placements of the presentation slides, I used Pinterest to find relevant pictures for this board. The hanger picture would be another prop that would be useful in the practical as I have a couple at home, making it accessible and easy to transport. I think using a max of 10 photos per slide would be ideal I don't want the slides to be too messy, the only words on the presentation is the title or a short explanation. I've now completed all of the planning needed for the FMP practical, I still need to book out the studio and figure out what clothes I'll need to bring in. A mix of 10-15 pieces of 'Shein' and 'Primark' clothing would be ideal, 2 hangers would be a an appropriate number for this project.
Practical mood board:
Moodboard for my practicals, most of the images are downloaded from Pinterest. I tried to use images that would relate to my practical, and that would be achievable in the studio, such as using a chair or a single subject.
Updated project planning timetable: I have 19/20 of the Pecha Kucha slides, I still need to draft notes for the recording.
I also included more pictures for the 'Creative Practitioners' page as it looked bare. The timetable dates are from 24/02/2025 (this week) - 19/05/2025 the final project assessment week, the resources that I'll be using throughout this project is Blogger, Wix, Pinterest, and PowerPoint.
For my FMP, I've decided to conduct a photoshoot on the effects of fast fashion, I thought creating a website using Wix would also be a good way to showcase my photos. The mass consumerism is a more realistic topic for both my essay and my FMP products. In the past, I have shopped on fast fashion websites so I think I can use some of my old clothes in this practical, I've found some examples that I'm inspired by;
I've used this image for my Pecha Kucha presentation, as the College studio is a bit smaller there's definitely going to be a downsize of much clothes I'll be using.
Project planning 10/03/2025:
The practical will take place next week, the ideal date I have in mind for this is 18/03/2025 as there'll be the most time to shoot the photos. This Wednesday, the class will be working from home so that gives me time to book out the studio for next week, the photos will probably be used as the experimentation sequence depending on how much time have left. Once I've finished the experimentation I can book out the studio again for the final photoshoot. One problem that I think I'll have is with the props, especially the bag of old clothes, I was thinking of using photoshop to put the clothes onto the subject instead of bringing it in as it could be an inconvenience. So far, I have one person on board for the shoot:
I sent her a message beforehand to check if she would be free that day, she'll probably be the first person that I'll start shooting. 30 minutes should be enough for each person as the lesson is 3 hours long, I'll need to get there 20 minutes before? 1:40? to set up the studio and position the lighting and the chair that I'll be using. I'll also need to take a few pictures of the clothes at home for this to work on Photoshop, preferably on my bed so I need to send an additional email to book out a camera for this weekend.
Communication Via teams:
The second person to be photographed is Chantel, I sent her a message via teams to let her know of the date and the time for the practical tomorrow
I have a range of tote bags at home so it could look more aesthetically pleasing if they're in totes as opposed to black heavy duty bags? Some organisational problems that could happen when shooting is the timing, the models may not have enough time to be photographed so I have to take precautions and mask them beforehand if they're available on the scheduled shooting day. I've completed all of the necessary research for this unit, the next part of the module is experimentation, I could also create an additional Wix website and add the practical photos as apart of the experimentation evidence. The website will have 5-6 pages, with the portfolio being the main focus, I have to plan the practical in detail to make sure that everything goes smoothly unlike some of my other photos. The location recce and risk assessment are linked above, the studio shouldn't have that many hazards apart from a few loose wires, it'll also be quiet due to the double doors.
Email I sent to cam support, the practical will take place on Wednesday 19th from 1:30 up until 3:30, hopefully the studio has some availability
This would be a good example of pictures that I'd expect to take on Wednesday, the first half will be the experimentation part, figuring out what poses would suit each person, the camera angles and lighting. I'll also be taking precautions regarding the camera focus as last time the pictures came out blurry which I wasn't satisfied with.
Practical plan; written instructions
- Keep the lighting simple, as this isn't an ordinary fashion photography shoot, the lighting is vital to the quality of the pictures. I think white soft box would work well for this type of photography. Even just the main lights would work as sometime the softbox can be too artificial and give off a glare when taking a picture
- Choosing the right setting, I normally use a Canon camera with the settings 'Aperture Priority' 'Portrait' or 'Auto' mode
- Make sure that the camera is in focus, I've learnt my lesson after the Unit 9 practical and I now check the camera focus vigorously and take test shots to make sure that the camera is in focus to avoid blurry shots that are unusable
- Stay organised, I need to come in 15 or 20 minutes before the scheduled shoot to set up the studio and make sure that the lighting is correct, the tripod and set up and the camera is turned on with full battery as the practical can take up to 2 hours
- Remember the props, the props are vital for this practical as the main premise is the issue of overconsumption in the fashion industry. A bag of clothes, 15-20 pieces, I could use only 3 coats instead to save space for the other props such as the old shoes. The chair will already be provided, only one commercial chair is needed for this shoot as I'll only be using one model at a time
- Clothing; All black, I need to bring in a black shirt from home for the model to wear as black will blend in with the studio's colour palette
